Cupertino is located in the west of San Jose. The name “Cupertino” comes from a village in Italy called “Copertino”. The name Cupertino first became widely used when John T Doyle, a San Francisco lawyer, and historian, named his winery on McClellan Road Cupertino.  Cupertino has a population of 57,820 as of 2020.  It is considered the 158th largest city in California and 678th largest city in the United States.  The average household income in Cupertino is $206,009 with a poverty rate of 5.97%.The median rental costs in recent years comes to $3163 per month, and the median house value is $1.71M.  The median age in Cupertino is 41.6 years and 40.8 years for males and 42.4 years for females.  According to the most recent ACS, the racial composition of Cupertino was: 67.48% are asian, 26.95% are white and the rest with other races.  About 34.38% of the population has a Bachelor’s Degree and 44.38% has a Graduate Degree.
 
A major milestone in Cupertino’s development was the creation by some of the city’s largest landowners of VALLCO business and Industrial Park in the early 1960s. Of the 25 property owners, 17 decided to pool their land to form VALLCO Park, 6 sold to Hewlett-Packard and now is owned by Apple and called Apple Park.  Cupertino is known for being the home of Apple Inc’’ corporate headquarters.
 
Cupertino never had a downtown before, but as the population grow with the expansion of the Apple Park, later in 2017, Sand Hill Property Company, founded in 1988, a local family owned company with a proven track record of successful value-add real estate projects across Silicon Valley, have decided to invest $330 million to develop this 18 acres of land in the heart of Silicon Valley. There they have not only developed the ” Main Street Cupertino“, they will be redeveloping Vallco Mall, office space to create urban retail clustered in separate buildings with retro architecture to evoke a downtown feel and additional residential housing.  This project is still under construction as of today, 2021.
 
Ask anyone in Silicon Valley what Cupertino is known for, and the answer likely will be “great schools” . According to the City of Cupertino School website, the district serves approximately 18,000 students in 19 elementary schools, one K-8 school and 5 middle schools throughout the city of Cupertino. The Fremont Union High School District has 5 high schools that are highly ranked in the region.  Two of the more well known ones would be Monta Vista High and Lynbrook High.  A number of schools and programs in Cupertino for children and adults focus on culture and language, including Chinese, Hindi, Japanese and Korean through the Language and Cultural Immersion Program.
 
Cupertino also has their regular weekly local Farmer’s Market on Fridays and Saturdays and many family friendly events every month at their City Hall, library and recreation center.
