The early 1900’s found Saratoga developing into a pleasant village as it became the trading center for the surrounding fruit-growing farms. The mountain setting and mild climate also made Saratoga a popular resort area. Lodges and inns thrived. The most famous was the original Saratoga Inn, built in 1912 on Saratoga Avenue across the street front he present day village post office. Saratoga later developed an enviable reputation as a highly desirable place to live. It also soon became a haven for wealthy San Franciscans who came to build elegant hillside homes overlooking the lush valley. One of these was the palatial Mediterranean-style home of the United States Senator James Phelan. His
Villa Montalvo is now a center for the cultural arts. Today, with a population of 30,886, Saratoga proudly preserves its pioneer heritage. The Historical Museum, dedicated on July 4th, 1976, traces the community’’ colorful history with displays of photos and artifacts. Other major attractions include
Hakone Gardens and
the Mountain Winery.

Saratoga Union School District, Saratoga Union School District is committed to making schools free from unlawful discrimination and provding equal opportunities for all indicuduals in education. Residences in the City of Saratoga fall into 4 different elementary school districts: Saratoga, Campbell, Cupertino and Moreland district, and there are 5 possible high schools assigned to households in Saratoga. However, Saratoga High School is the only school within the Saratoga-Los Gatos Union School District. Another option for Saratoga residents is the highly rated Lynbrook High and Monta Vista High which are part of the very highly rated Cupertino School District. The last 2 high schools that pertain to Saratoga residents are Prospect High and Westmont High who are part of Campbell Union High School District.
Saratoga downtown is truly a historic downtown shopping district. It is filled with good local restaurants, tasting rooms , an art gallery and with not many ‘chain stores’, making the downtown Saratoga area a delightful and unique place to spend the day. As Saratoga is such a historical district, there are not many large companies situated in Saratoga, but because it’s located next to Cupertino, many people who work in Cupertino will choose to live in Saratoga for a close commute.
